In tegenstelling tot vorige Prince-albums, werd het merendeel van Diamonds And Pearls opgenomen met The New Power Generation, een groep die hij grotendeels uit de Twin Cities-regio had samengesteld. Ze deelden culturele achtergronden en lokale ervaringen, en hielpen Prince zijn vroegere invloeden met het heden te verbinden door een nieuwe opbeurende mix van hiphop, dance, gospel en pop te creëren die hem wereldwijd naar de top van de charts zou brengen.

The New Power Generation was een band die Prince zo vol overtuiging geloofde dat hij ze co-auteur gaf op de cover van Diamonds And Pearls, iets wat hij alleen eerder had gedaan met één andere band, The Revolution. De groep bestond uit Sonny Thompson (zang en bas), Damon Dickson (zang en percussie), Rosie Gaines (zang en keyboards), Michael Bland (drums), Kirk Johnson (zang en percussie), Tony M (zang), Levi Seacer jr. (bas, gitaar en zang) en Tommy Barbarella (keyboards).
